She lay there, unable to move, staring at the crystal chandelier above her as blood slowly trickled from her temple. The pain was sharp, but the betrayal cut deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexander Reed\u2019s voice cracked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He dropped to his knees beside her, his expensive suit forgotten, his hands trembling as he touched her face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Victoria Lane stood frozen at the top of the staircase. Her champagne silk dress shimmered under the lights, but her face had drained of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His eyes were locked on his mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evelyn struggled to breathe. Her vision blurred, but she forced herself to stay conscious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlex\u2026\u201d she whispered. \u201cI\u2026 I didn\u2019t fall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexander stiffened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head guard cleared his throat, stepping forward with the tablet in his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSir\u2026 the security system auto-synced footage to the cloud. This is from the staircase camera.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Victoria\u2019s hesitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her glance around the empty lobby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The push.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A gasp rippled through the guards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexander stood slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He turned toward Victoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou pushed her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Victoria shook her head, tears instantly filling her eyes. \u201cAlexander, please\u2014she was provoking me. She said terrible things. I panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou tried to kill my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo! I just wanted her gone!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silence fell like a verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexander took the tablet, his fingers white around the edges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re leaving this house tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Victoria stared at him. \u201cAlexander\u2026 I love you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He laughed once \u2014 a hollow, broken sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cYou loved my name. My money. My house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Victoria\u2019s voice rose in panic. \u201cYou can\u2019t do this! I gave up everything for you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexander leaned closer, his voice cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd tonight, you give it all back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the guards escorted her away screaming, Alexander knelt beside Evelyn again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMom, I\u2019m here,\u201d he whispered. \u201cI should\u2019ve protected you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evelyn closed her eyes, tears sliding down her cheeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis house\u2026\u201d she murmured. \u201cIt was never mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexander shook his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
