I was twenty-four years old, three nights into my new job, and struggling to breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man who’d thrown me onto the table stood above me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His friends laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One still held up his phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the office door opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Victor Marshall stepped into the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The laughter stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wore a black shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows. Tattoos covered his forearms, and the scar through his left eyebrow made his expression look permanently dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Victor glanced toward the bartender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I needed rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Victor remained outside the examination room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I finally emerged, he stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
