The canyon was already filling with water when Thorn Ashby heard the sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not a scream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weak. Ragged. Desperate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thunder cracked over the New Mexico Territory as Thorn pushed deeper between the sandstone walls. The passage narrowed until his shoulders nearly scraped both sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he saw her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A young Apache woman was trapped against the rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her wrists were bound behind her with soaked rawhide. Her left ankle was pinned beneath a slab of sandstone. Blood streaked one forearm where she had fought against the restraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the water was rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her name was Kaiba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Thorn didn’t know that yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All he knew was that the instant she saw his rifle, terror hardened her face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She thought he had come to finish what someone else had started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thorn immediately leaned the rifle against the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he raised both hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m not going to hurt you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She couldn’t understand the words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But she understood the gesture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another roar echoed through the canyon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thorn looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brown water curled around his boots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They had minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He dropped beside the stone crushing her ankle and heaved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He tried again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His arms shook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rock shifted an inch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaiba stared at him, silent even as pain twisted across her face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Come on!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thorn pushed until something tore painfully in his shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He drew his knife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She recoiled instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So he reversed it and offered her the handle first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For one long second, neither moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Kaiba slowly turned her back and held out her bound wrists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two cuts freed her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came a sound that froze them both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A deep, violent rumbling from farther up the canyon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thorn knew exactly what it meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flash flood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Move!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They ran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaiba could barely put weight on her injured ankle, but she refused Thorn’s hand and clawed her way up the rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind them, the canyon exploded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wall of muddy water ripped through the place where she had been trapped moments earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They reached a narrow ledge just before the torrent swallowed the canyon floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an hour they sat there, soaked and silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thorn divided his food and water and placed half between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, she touched her chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Kaiba.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Thorn.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She repeated it softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Thorn.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By nightfall, he took her to his ranch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaiba began teaching him words in Jicarilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thorn taught her English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She showed him how to calm a frightened colt he had failed to tame for weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He learned that silence did not always mean distrust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it meant someone was finally beginning to feel safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Thorn learned why Kaiba had been left in that canyon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The men responsible were connected to the Iron Mesa Land Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They wanted Apache families removed from disputed land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaiba had seen too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaving her bound in a flood channel had been meant to guarantee her silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thorn reported everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Kaiba sent word to her brother, Damar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the company moved first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One Tuesday afternoon, three riders appeared outside Thorn’s ranch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leader looked directly at Kaiba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’re here for the Apache woman.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thorn stepped between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Show me your authority.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rider’s expression changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’ll return.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then they rode away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaiba watched the dust disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They come back,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“More men.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thorn looked toward the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Probably.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaiba’s next words made him turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My brother is coming.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But neither of them knew the riders would return with five armed men, official-looking papers\u2014and a plan far more dangerous than the first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when they did, Thorn would have to decide whether saving Kaiba once had been courage…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or whether courage meant risking everything a second time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
