Don’t drink that wine, Daddy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> Mark, control your brat right now!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lily:<\/strong> She put something in your glass!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> She is lying, Mark!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> Is this true, Victoria?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lily:<\/strong> Look under her napkin!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark sat at the head of the long oak table inside his quiet house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The bright light from the chandelier made the silver forks shine like fresh glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He looked across the table at Victoria with a soft smile on his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria wore a dark dress that matched her smooth black hair perfectly today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They were celebrating their engagement after two long years of dating each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark lifted his crystal glass of red wine to make a quiet toast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria watched his hand move with a strange look in her blue eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Suddenly, small shoes slapped against the cold marble floor near the kitchen door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seven-year-old Lily ran into the dining room like a fast wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She hit the crystal glass right out of Mark’s fingers before he drank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The glass flew across the room and smashed into small pieces against the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dark red wine splashed all over the white tile like a deep stain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark pulled his hands back in pure surprise and looked down at his daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria stood up from her leather chair so fast her napkin dropped down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> What is wrong with this wild kid?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> Lily, why did you just do that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lily:<\/strong> Daddy, you cannot drink that red wine tonight!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> She just ruined our special night on purpose!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lily:<\/strong> No! I saw her put powder inside your glass!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria’s face turned white as a clean sheet of paper in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She reached down to grab Lily by her small yellow dress sleeve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark stood up between them and pushed Victoria’s hand back very gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> Do not touch my daughter like that right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> She is making up terrible stories to hurt me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lily:<\/strong> I am not lying, Daddy, I saw her do it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark looked down at the puddle of red wine on the marble floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He saw tiny white bubbles floating on top of the spilled liquid now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His heart beat faster inside his chest as he stepped closer to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> What is that white foam in the wine, Victoria?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> It is just soap from the dishwasher, Mark!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lily:<\/strong> Look inside her small black purse right over there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria snatched her purse off the table and held it behind her back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark looked at her eyes and saw real fear hidden inside them now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He took one step toward her and held out his open hand silently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> Hand me the bag right now, Victoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> You are really going to trust a little child over me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> Just show me what is inside the bag right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria stepped back toward the dark hallway behind the big table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Chapter 3: A Powder In The Purse The dining room was so quiet you could hear the tall clock tick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark kept his hand out while Lily hid right behind his dark pants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria clutched her black leather purse with both of her shaking hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> We were supposed to start a brand new life together today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> Then show me the inside of the purse and prove her wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria unzipped the top of the bag with a sharp pulling motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She pulled out a small glass bottle filled with white dust inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark reached out quickly and took the tiny glass bottle from her fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The label on the small bottle had red warning letters printed on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was a dangerous chemical used to eliminate pests in big gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark felt a cold chill run all the way down his back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> Why do you have this awful poison in your purse, Victoria?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> I bought that for the garden plants yesterday morning!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lily:<\/strong> She put it in your glass while you were in the kitchen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> Shut your mouth, you foolish little brat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark stepped in front of Lily and raised his voice high and firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> Do not ever talk to my daughter like that again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> She has hated me since the very first day we met!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lily:<\/strong> Because you were mean to Daddy when he was not looking!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria looked around the room like a trapped animal in a cage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She knew the heavy front door was locked behind the living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark pulled out his smartphone and dialed three numbers very quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> What are you doing with your phone right now, Mark?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> I am calling the police department to come over here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria lunged forward to grab the phone out of his right hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark swung his arm away and pushed her back onto the chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She fell into the soft leather cushion with a loud angry gasp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria:<\/strong> You will regret this for the rest of your life, Mark!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> You tried to kill me in my own home tonight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lily:<\/strong> The police are coming to take her away, right Daddy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark:<\/strong> Yes, sweetie, nobody is going to hurt us anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Victoria stared at the white powder bottle sitting on the dark table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
