Daniel remained kneeling beside the wrecked sofa, holding the small red device between his fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rex stopped staring at the gap in the armrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His ears perked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone had just inserted a key into the front door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German Shepherd positioned itself in front of Daniel and began to growl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The doorknob descended slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a fraction of a second, her face changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was no surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Rex has gone crazy,” Daniel replied, trying to keep his voice steady. “He’s wrecked the sofa.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went straight to the armrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four months earlier, \u00c1lvaro had been the one who showed the police Elena’s alleged farewell message. He had also insisted that they stop looking for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMaybe he just got tired of you,\u201d he had told her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel was hurt by that phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now she seemed ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Why have you come?” he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014I wanted to see the dog. You told me they had found him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c1lvaro looked at the sofa again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014Are you sure he didn’t take anything?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rex growled again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel waited until he heard the elevator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he locked the door and took out the recorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The device contained six files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first was the message I had already heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the second one, Elena spoke in a rapid voice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“\u00c1lvaro has been siphoning money from the company for years. He’s using your signature. I found the transfers and copied them. If I tell you this without proof, he’ll make you think I’m trying to drive a wedge between two brothers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel sat down slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c1lvaro had been managing the accounts of the family business for eleven years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel signed the balance sheets that he prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had never personally reviewed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third file contained a discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fifth file was empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the sixth room, only Elena’s breathing and a whispered phrase could be heard:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel did not go to the shooting range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn’t want to make the mistake of facing his brother alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He called Inspector Paula Mendoza, the agent who had initially investigated the disappearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paula listened to the entire recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This changes the case,” he said. “But we can’t enter a private vessel based solely on a recorded reference. We need to link it to \u00c1lvaro.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel looked at Rex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dog remained by the sofa, its snout resting on the hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
