When I opened my front door, my wife was raising my dead father’s cane over my nephew’s head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noah had both arms around Lily, shielding her against the hallway wall. My five-year-old daughter was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. Vanessa stood three feet away, white-knuckled, furious, the black walnut cane lifted like a club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Put it down.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She spun toward me. “Daniel, you don’t understand.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I understand enough. Put. It. Down.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something in my voice made her hesitate. I crossed the room, took Lily behind me, and shoved Noah toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noah was pale. “Uncle Dan–“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Not now.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lily grabbed my shirt. “Daddy, files. Noah found files.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanessa lowered the cane, but only because her phone was ringing. She snatched it from the entry table and hit the screen without looking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man’s voice came through the speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Did Carter see the death certificate?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanessa froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man said, “Vanessa?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She killed the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked at her. “What death certificate?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was nothing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noah pointed toward my office. “Top drawer. Under the tax folders.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanessa lunged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I caught her wrist. The cane hit the floor with a crack that made Lily scream again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Don’t,” I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For one second, Vanessa’s face changed. The fear disappeared. The anger disappeared. What remained was colder than either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My hands started shaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For thirteen months, I had received emails from Claire. Bank notices. Angry messages. One final warning telling me not to look for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
