I pushed open the door to my wife\u2019s private hospital room and saw Isabella standing over her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khloe was seven months pregnant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was on her back beside the hospital bed, one hand wrapped around her belly, the other pressed against the marble floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isabella\u2019s red heel was planted against the outside of Khloe\u2019s hip and upper thigh, pinning her down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For one second, neither woman moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Isabella saw me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She pulled her foot away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I knocked her hand away and slapped her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She staggered against the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stepped between her and Khloe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isabella stopped pretending to cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That change bothered me almost as much as what I had walked in on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then her eyes moved upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toward the corner of the ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small security camera had been mounted above the doorway since Khloe was transferred into the private suite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its recording light blinked steadily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I thought I knew why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I thought the camera had caught her attacking my pregnant wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Khloe reached for my trouser leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I crouched beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isabella looked at the camera again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hadn\u2019t walked into the beginning of whatever Isabella was doing to my wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapter 2 – Why Khloe Was in the Hospital<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khloe hadn\u2019t been admitted because of Isabella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least that was what I believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two nights earlier, she woke with severe abdominal pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our obstetrician wanted her monitored because she was only twenty-nine weeks pregnant and had experienced contractions earlier in the pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By noon the next day, things had stabilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wanted to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khloe sent me home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve been wearing the same shirt for thirty hours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was my wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even frightened, she could make me feel ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I left for three hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isabella arrived while I was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was Khloe\u2019s older half sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their relationship had never been easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isabella was polished, competitive and exhausting, but Khloe kept trying because their father, Anthony Rossi, had died five years earlier and Isabella was one of the few connections she had left to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I returned that evening, Isabella was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khloe was quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That produced my first surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t there for routine patient surveillance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room had previously been used for a high-profile patient whose security team requested temporary cameras in the entry areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One unit remained active while hospital security finalized removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Access wasn\u2019t something they could simply hand to me because I demanded it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I thought I had misheard her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anthony Rossi had been dead for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
