the steel barriers covering the ballroom doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then to the security cameras above us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then back to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re insane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His voice was quieter now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A senator near the staircase demanded that someone open the doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A television executive threatened to have everyone arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A billionaire hammered his fist against one of the steel barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The barriers did not move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Damian suddenly stepped toward me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p twelve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His expression tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd nineteen of them are the reason these doors were installed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence changed the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whispers stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several people looked around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At one white countdown appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">00:59.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">00:58.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">00:57.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone screamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Damian looked toward the screens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I did not answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I watched his father instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arthur Cross stood near the center of the ballroom with a champagne glass in his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was sixty-two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p the East Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For thirty years, newspapers had described him as untouchable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tonight he no longer looked untouchable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked terrified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His champagne glass slowly lowered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
